Skyline Leeway are an amazing Pop punk / alternative band who hail from sunny Madrid, Spain. The band released their debut single 'Alive' back in 2017 and in the three years since the band have released multiple singles as well as their debut EP 'Stages' which released in 2019.
Despite the world in turmoil, 2020 is also shaping up to be a stellar year for the band. Already this year they have released 'Remember' featuring Kellin Quinn, of Sleeping With Sirens, back in May and more recently the amazing new cover single of 'OK Not To Be Okay' was released on September 18th. We recently spoke to the band about their time in lockdown, their collaboration with Kellin Quinn and we find out just how 'scene' the band were growing up...
"As a band what kept us sane the most has been keeping up with our work routine by video calls that actually grew on our relationship. We were preparing the release of Remember long before so we had something thrilling to look forward to."
Firstly, unfortunately I have to ask this at the moment, how have you guys been coping in the lockdown? What kind of things have been keeping you sane during the lockdown and pandemic?
Heyyy Not A Phase, hope you are all staying safe over there! As a band what kept us sane the most has been keeping up with our work routine by video calls that actually grew on our relationship. We were preparing the release of Remember long before so we had something thrilling to look forward to.
Let’s be honest 2020 has been a weird year so far and things will probably be weird for a while. As an artist, especially an artist with a new single ‘Remember’ which released during the pandemic, how (if at all) did this affect the singles release?
The reception was even better than expected as music has been a getaway for people during this weird times.
Final question on the pandemic I promise. With the release ‘Remember’ on May 22nd releasing in the pandemic, would you do anything different with the release in hindsight?
No as the release was already planned pre-quarantine, the only difference is that we couldn’t take it to the stages to grow that connection playing it as we are dying to.
"We’d say there is no definitive Skyline Leeway sound, 'Remember' is just one of our faces. We don’t stick to anything but what we are feeling at the moment with our touch combining solid riffs with fresh melodies."
How did you get into writing and creating music? Was there a decisive moment or event that you remember that made you stop and think, wow, THIS is what I want to do with my life?
We felt like the only way to understand ourselves was by creating music and hopefully that could either help other people.
’Remember’ is an absolute belter of a track and has already received massive cri3cal praise. Is it always the ambition of the band to always push the limits of what the defini3ve Skyline Leeway sound can be?
We’d say there is no definitive Skyline Leeway sound, Remember is just one of our faces. We don’t stick to anything but what we are feeling at the moment with our touch combining solid riffs with fresh melodies.
With everything still up in the air, what do you think the rest of 2020 will look like for you as a band?
Whatever this situation let us plan we’ll be making noise but is about to be responsible now and come back louder. And there’s plenty of new stories written so stay tuned!
"The more you use a language the better you express yourself. And 'Remember' was just a natural expression of our evolution."
’Remember’ shows new unheard depths in your sound and in comparison, to ‘Stages’ in 2019, was this a conscious choice or a natural evolution of your sound?
The more you use a language the better you express yourself. And Remember was just a natural expression of our evolution. That doesn’t take us away to sound as “Stages” but what we are feeling at the moment.
If you HAD to choose one song from the Skyline Leeway catalogue that you feel would best encompasses the bands signature sound for a new listener, which song would you choose and why?
We as listeners too feel that none of them encompasses the totality of a band but getting deeper in their catalogue.
Can you tell us a fun fact about each member of the band?
Irene, Ren, Aryu and Lukke got the same ‘XIII’ tattoo as a somehow sign linking us. And we never saw a baterist smiling the whole set till we met Vic.
"Kellin was the most professional taking part on his verses. We told him the meaning about being remembered, the ones who change the world not waiting for it, though there’ll be people standing in your way. And he got so involved in it we couldn’t be more thankful with the result."
What is on your playlist at the moment?
‘Obey’ by BMTH feat. Yungblud.
'Remember' features Kelling Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens, how did this collaboration come about?
We sent him a demo as we wrote it with him in mind. To our surprise, he quickly answered back he loved it and wanted to work with us. It’s been such a pleasure since.
How much creative input did Kellin have into his section of ‘Remember’?
Kellin was the most professional taking part on his verses. We told him the meaning about being remembered, the ones who change the world not waiting for it, though there’ll be people standing in your way. And he got so involved in it we couldn’t be more thankful with the result.
You guys are based out of Madrid, Spain. What is the pop-punk scene like in Madrid? Are there any other local bands you would like us to check out?
There aren’t as many pop punk bands now as it used to, but we’d love to grow with them together. We encourage people to support their local artist friends! Some bands we would recommend, among good friends, are Teksuo, Walking With Wolves, Healing Sequenz…
Finally, as we are called Not A Phase, were you guys scene kids when you were growing up? If not, what kind of music were you rocking out back in your forma3ve teenage years?
We deffo had a ‘Not A Phase’ phase haha. In our teenage years we were rocking out Simple Plan (Irene), Panic At The Disco (Ren), Slipknot (Aryu), RHCP (Lukke), Foo Fighters (Vic)… just to name a few.
