Ravened are a heavy metal band who hail from Jönköping, Sweden. The band released their debut album 'From The Depths' on August 7th to critical praise. With influences ranging from Pantera; Lamb of God, Bloodbath and Metallica, Ravened aim to create their own unique take on balls-to-the-walls metal.
We recently caught up with Ravened to discuss their debut album, 'From The Depths', how the band came to be, their influences in music and what we can expect from the band for the remainder of 2020...
"We keep on jamming together, keep on writing new songs, try to get tighter and tighter, and when the venues open up again, we will be standing in the front-line sharper than ever and ready to rock."
Firstly, I have to ask this at the moment, how have you guys been coping in the lock-down, what kind of things have you been up to since the lock-down came into effect. Well, we recorded our album ”From The Depths” in February, just about the same time as the pandemic arrived in Sweden. So since then we have filmed music videos, spent time jamming our new songs, trying to get the message about our new album out. Let’s be honest 2020 has been a weird year so far and things will probably be weird for a while. As an artist, especially an artist with singles like ‘From The Depths’ and ‘Foul Deeds’ being released in the pandemic. How has this affected your rhythm? This is the time you would be out their promoting the new album! Other than the fact that we can't perform our songs live on a stage, our tempo hasn't slowed down. We keep on jamming together, keep on writing new songs, try to get tighter and tighter, and when the venues open up again, we will be standing in the front-line sharper than ever and ready to rock. How did you get into writing and creating music? Was there a decisive moment or event that you remember that made you stop and think, wow, THIS is what I want to do with my life? Music has been a big part of our lives for a very long time and during this time we have developed a passion for music. It probably wasn’t a specific moment where we decided that this was the thing we wanted to do, but it slowly became our passion to write music.
"Our debut album will give every fan of metal music something to enjoy. We have merged riffs and ideas from our very first jamming sessions together with brand new songs, to show the listeners who we are and what we're about."
How did the band get together? The guitarists Olle, Willy and the drummer Oliwer met up in school and started to jam out to some songs that they all listened to and sometimes Olle or Willy would play a riff that they made and Oliwer would play something on the drums and it would progress from there. Olle’s friend Simon, who was a guitarist agreed to play bass and also had some riffs to show. Olle was the singer from the beginning so it was a four member band. But then we met Isac, who could growl and scream, and we said that we would like to jam with him at our rehearsal space. One weekend we jammed and we all said that it was really fun. We felt that we would like to have growl vocals instead of just clean vocals. So we asked Isac to join us, and he said yes, and we felt that we’ve found our sound. ‘From The Depths’ and ‘Foul Deeds’ are singles taken from your upcoming album ‘From the Depths’. Can you give us any information regarding the upcoming album releasing 7th August? Our debut album will give every fan of metal music something to enjoy. We have merged riffs and ideas from our very first jamming sessions together with brand new songs, to show the listeners who we are and what we're about. Your latest release, ‘Foul Deeds’ was released on July 3rd. Can you go into the creation process of this track a little more? How did this track come about? Olle came up with the riffs for the song and it was the first “fast” song we made. The idea of the song was to play fast and dribble as much as possible.
"Almost every song we have written we have pushed the limits. Almost every song is a struggle but we love it!"
‘Foul Deeds’ is an absolute belter of a track and has already received massive critical praise. Is it always the ambition of the band to always push the limits of what the definitive Ravened sound can be? Sometimes it’s just easier to go easy with riffs and such but that’s not the case for us. Almost every song we have written we have pushed the limits. Almost every song is a struggle but we love it! With everything still up in the air, what do you think the rest of 2020 will look like for you as a band? Of course everything’s possible but it feels like nothing will happen with gigs and such. Though this is the best time to practice the songs we have and write material for new songs. That is what we are going to do for the rest of the year probably! If you had to choose one song from the Ravened catalogue that you feel encompasses the bands signature sound, which song would you choose and why? That would be “Stridsugglan” because that song is just us! Heavy riffs with a lot of energy with inspiration from bands that we love!
Can you tell us a fun fact about each member of the band? We can tell you that every member have some kind of ADHD. That is a fun fact we can say about everyone in the band! What is on your playlist at the moment? Well we listen to bands like Pantera, Metallica, Slipknot, Korn, Gojira, Meshuggah, King Diamond and such. Finally, as we are called Not A Phase, were you guys scene kids when you were growing up? If not, what kind of music were you rocking out back in your formative teenage years? We were scene kids! We have always loved music and that is our passion. Nothing else.
